No one said getting a degree was going to be easy. While some of
us are working full or part time, others are raising a child or
children, or committing ourselves to some combination thereof. This
leaves most of us with a delicate balancing act to conduct when
it comes to handling the social, professional, educational, and
family aspects of our lives while getting a degree.
Unfortunately, for many, this balancing act is just too difficult
to accomplish and leads to one aspect of the group being set aside.
All too often, this waylaid portion of our lives is the educational
side. We have to work to put food on the table, we need time to
interact with our friends and families, and raising children is
a job in itself. So we refocus our efforts and put our attempts
at getting a degree on hold, where they sit until we have the time
to get back to them -- sometimes indefinitely. If balancing your
life while working on your educational requirements is a concern
or you have already found yourself bogged down in the mire of scheduling
conflicts, priority issues, and time management factors, here are
a few ways to limit the chaos and better balance your life.
Step back for a moment
Sometimes we become lost in the hectic pace of the day-to-day events
that comprise our lives. The phrase “can’t see the forest
for the trees,” means something when your life seems so consumed
with the trivial daily events that you don’t have time to
focus on the big picture. This is when it’s time to step back
for a moment, collect yourself, and remember in which direction
you want your life to be heading.
Find somewhere quiet to relax, even if it’s just for ten
or fifteen minutes. Put on some quiet music, take a couple deep
breaths and imagine where you want to be in one year, five years,
ten years. Imagine yourself putting your degree to use in whatever
capacity makes you feel successful and worthwhile. See yourself
reaping the rewards of your education with bigger paychecks, a new
car, a better home, a better life for you and your family. This
is what all your hard work, stress, and sleepless nights are meant
to accomplish. It might seem like your spinning in circles now,
but you must bear in mind that the exhaustion and stress you feel
is moving you ever closer to a better life.
Refocus
Now it’s time to refocus. Once you have envisioned yourself
in your new life, it is time to set down a plan as to how you are
going to get yourself to that point. Life can seem like a never-ending
jumble of tedious events when you’re without clear-cut goals
and direction. It is therefore necessary to present yourself with
a list of reasonable and achievable goals to meet along your journey.
Draw a timeline of sorts, using goals and dates to meet those goals
as stepping-stones to achieve your dreams. Include goals that are
related to your family, social life, work, and career objectives.
Don’t limit your ambitions, but keep your targets reasonable
so that you don’t become frustrated along the way. As you
refocus your aim, understand how your degree will play into your
future and how important it is in achieving those end goals. Sometimes
we must sacrifice in the short term to gain in the long.
Commit with renewed enthusiasm
Now that you have a plan, complete with goals and a timeline, throw
yourself into your work with renewed enthusiasm. You should feel
invigorated knowing that your new life awaits and understanding
what you must do to get there. You’ll suddenly find that with
a set course of action to guide you, your life feels less chaotic
and there is clear understanding of how and where to direct your
energies. Life without goals can feel like floating through a dream,
just waiting for something or someone to shake you back to reality.
You know what you must do, all you have to do now is keep yourself
on track and tick off your goals as you accomplish them.
