For some people, the chance to obtain a Master’s Degree immediately
after having received a Bachelor’s Degree in a particular course
of study was not an option at the time. Financial issues, family responsibilities,
and/or the necessity of seeking immediate employment upon completion
of four years of college all may have been mitigating circumstances.
For others, the idea of spending anywhere from twelve to eighteen
to even twenty-four more months in a “traditional” college
setting may have just not been feasible, even though obtaining a
Master’s Degree is usually done in a slightly different manner.
Or, they may have had an offer of employment that was simply too
good to turn down or postpone until the post-graduate degree was
earned.
For these, and, subsequently, for ANYONE wishing to pursue a Master’s
Degree, online courses of study are often the best option. This
is further enhanced by the abundance of institutions that offer
such programs.
As mentioned earlier, the steps for acquiring a Master’s
Degree are not quite the same as those necessary for earning a Bachelor’s
Degree. Emphasis is almost always placed on one particular area
or part of a course of study, rather than being more generalized.
Additionally, there may sometimes be delays in the process. A student
working on a Master’s Degree through means other than an online
education program may find that requirements, assignments, and other
functions may already be completed, but, for one reason or another,
the student is unable to move on to the next step or phase of the
program because the instructor must approve the previous material,
and this can only be done at certain times that can be fitted into
the instructor’s schedule.
When one utilizes online study opportunities to achieve the goal
of earning Master’s Degrees, any lapses of time between steps
can be greatly diminished, if not eliminated all together. The instructor
may still specify that work can only be turned in at a set time,
or may not be turned in before a particular time; however, once
the work has been submitted online, it only requires the click of
a mouse or a few keystrokes for the instructor to be able to access
the material.
Online study for a Master’s Degree also gives the student
the advantage of having reference sources literally “at one’s
fingertips”. Unless an instructor specifically requires that
some research occur “off-line”, the student does not
have to schedule or try to find time to go to a library, bookstore,
or other similar place to obtain the information needed.
Many institutions offer online study for Master’s Degrees.
Among them are A.I.U. Online, Baker University Online, and Everest
University Online. Additionally, many well-known “physical”
universities and colleges, such as Baker College and A. T. Still
University (which specializes in Master’s Degrees in the Sciences
fields) also offers online study.
The individual who once may have thought that the dream of having
a Master’s Degree was just that—a dream—may now
see that turn into a reality through online study.
